BROADWAY-BOUND Rock 'N' Roll Extravaganza

ONE NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN is going to Broadway! Mary Bridget Davies and Randy Johnson’s “exhilarating” (Washington Post) show will transfer to New York in September and Broadway will discover what our audiences have known for months – this show rocks!  Packed with classic songs like “Piece of My Heart, “Summertime” and “Mercedes Benz,” One Night with Janis Joplin offers an unforgettable rock ‘n’ roll ride. Don't miss one of America's greatest rock 'n' roll originals, performing with the goddesses of the blues who influenced her, as they deliver "no-holds-barred vocal fire through one classic song after another." It takes Mary Bridget Davies about an hour to physically become Janis Joplin.

As for the mental and vocal preparation, "it happens throughout the day with me," says Davies, 34, sitting in her dressing room at Arena Stage. The star of the blockbuster hit "One Night With Janis Joplin," at Arena for the second summer in a row ("Back by popular demand!") and heading to Broadway in the fall, is wearing black leggings, a gray T-shirt, and neon pink studded flip-flops. Her long brown hair — which she is contractually obligated not to alter — is wavy and still damp from the shower. "As soon as you wake up and open your eyes, you test your voice to see where you are," she says… Read more

no-holds-barred vocal fire through one classic song after another."

Mary Bridget Davies is “a force of nature.”

"[Mary Bridget] Davies … rides her voice like a bronco-buster hanging onto a frenzied stallion … [Sabrina Elayne] Carten, one of the few women in the world
who can do Aretha Franklin, and make it sound genuine.”DC Theatre Scene

“Come to this show … it’ll knock your socks off.”ShowBiz Radio

AMERICAN VOICES
“In these days where fame is instant and true musicianship rare, the word ‘artist’ is an often-misused statement. As we are held hostage to a manufactured pop culture on a daily basis, I feel we must constantly revisit our cultural history and explore the authentic forces that have shaped the landscape of our lives. One of those authentic forces for me is Janis Joplin. Her fame was earned – her following grew as she grew – people were drawn to her and she was drawn to them.

Janis is a true artist without contrivance or artifice. People like to say ‘ahead of her time.’ I happen to believe she was right on time. This isn’t just Janis’ story: it’s all of our stories, in one way or another. We all touch and inform each other as we travel this life. The world is a better place because Janis was here for a moment and I trust that you will take away with you a piece of her heart, her spirit and her wisdom.”

— Randy Johnson, playwright/director
