Musical Theater Audition Intensive
The Musical Theater Audition Intensive is a weeklong audition preparation program through the Arena Stage Academy. It is intended for those preparing to audition for university programs/conservatories or those planning to audition for shows (professional, high school, etc.) in the coming year. Taught by experts in the field, participants learn audition techniques for the acting and singing components of a musical theater audition. The program also includes training in choosing material that highlights your strengths, preparation, audition strategies and résumés. May be done alone or in conjunction with the Musical Theater Training Company.
Preparation: Students should prepare materials for an audition preview the first day: a song and a monologue. Pieces should be memorized and sheet music provided for the accompanist. Students should wear or bring clothing in which they can dance.
Day One: Students will perform their audition pieces for the faculty for feedback and coaching.
Content: Students will participate in daily vocal training; receive song and monologue coaching; have a session with Arena Stage’s casting director on headshots, resumes, choosing the right audition material and the business of theater; receive training in audition etiquette; attend master classes in vocal performance; learn about callbacks and how to make the most of them and have one-on-one coaching sessions with faculty specialists. There will also be a special section on college musical theater program auditions and applications.
At the end of the week, students will audition again for the panel, applying their work from the week.
Students will develop their musical theater audition skills and audition pieces through daily group classes, one-time master classes with guest artists, and one-on-one coaching. Students will be expected to memorize and work on material outside of workshop hours.
