Theater 101 Audience Enrichment SeminarOpening Windows Into the Work

Theater 101 is an in-depth process designed for theater lovers interested in deepening their understanding of how a show is developed. Over the course of four sessions, participants receive unprecedented access to a show's journey – from director concept to technical rehearsal to performance. Led by Arena Stage’s Literary Manager, this intimate class size of 20 participants provides for more individual attention and deeper exploration of the stages of rehearsal and performance. Courses are outlined below:

Smokey Joe’s CafÉ The Songs of Leiber and Stoller Words and Music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
Directed by Randy Johnson
Choreography by Parker Esse
April 25-June 8

Only 20 Spots Available!

$275 for all four sessions plus a show poster signed by the cast!

Session 1 – Meet the Director
Thursday, April 17, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Go inside the rock and roll world of Smokey Joe’s Café, with a special reception and design presentation with director, Randy Johnson.

Session 2 – Technical Rehearsal
Saturday, April 26, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Prior to a weekend day tech rehearsal, participants gather in the Molly Smith Study for a casual reception and the chance to mingle with each other and Arena Stage staff members. A member of the Artistic Development staff as well as a member of the creative team discuss the process, followed by some Q&A. Participants are then led into the house to watch a portion of that day’s technical rehearsal.

Session 3 – Invited Dress Rehearsal (IDR)
Thursday, April 24, 8:00 p.m.

Be part of the first audience to experience the show, followed by a brief discussion with Arena Stage’s Literary Manager.

Session 4 – Performance + Artist Q&A
Tuesday, May 20, 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy the production during the run and see how it’s grown since the IDR. Plus enjoy one of our popular post-show discussions with members of the cast.
