Director of Media Relations

The Director of Media Relations serves as the lead liaison between members of the media and Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. S/he is responsible for leading Arena Stage’s media relations efforts, developing the media relations strategy and executing it in direct consultation with the Associate Executive Director and the theater’s senior leadership. S/he aggressively seeks out and develops story ideas for placement in local, regional, national and international news outlets across all available and evolving media platforms including print, radio, television and online for each of the theater’s productions and newsworthy institutional events. All media efforts support the vision of Artistic Director Molly Smith and Executive Director Edgar Dobie and help define Arena Stage as a national center dedicated to American voices and artists.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as spokesperson for Arena Stage when access to senior leadership is not available.
  • Establish a solid rapport with current media contacts and continuously work to expand press list and database, particularly with national publications.
  • Coordinate press photography and video capture tied to productions and institutional events; select visual materials (photo and b-roll) for media outlets.
  • Mentor and supervise all efforts of the Publicist and Media Relations Fellow.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree (degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications and/or Theater preferred); 6-8 years of previous press/publicity experience; demonstrated success in gaining placement in local and national media. Must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Some evenings and weekends are required.
